Carver Flats

Low against the water. Everything the Authority wants is here.

Carver Flats, the Flats to everyone who lives there: a district of walk-ups and stoops on the river side of the City — a barbershop that remembers everything, a pawnshop that appraises everyone, a print shop with a mimeograph in the back. Black and Puerto Rican, working, indebted, and scheduled for clearance under the Renewal Authority's Stillwater Rise plan.

Locations

  • Klein Job Printing — where The Plain Truth was run off every week.
  • Vera Kestrel's apartment — a third-floor walk-up six blocks from the shop.
  • Okafor's barbershop — the district's memory.
  • Grosz Loans & Appraisal — the pawnshop.
  • The Half Note — the jazz basement two blocks from the pier.
  • Tin City — the camp under the on-ramp, at the district's edge.
