Rictus of the Bells¶
A wanderborne satyr jester whose bells go silent at the exact moments that matter — present at every turning point in Heliakros's history as a witness, an accelerant, and something that has chosen its side.
Portrait¶
Background¶
Psychology¶
Motivations¶
Be present at the moment the world turns — and make sure it turns the right way. He has chosen Keleth's vision not from ideology but from appetite. He wants to see what happens next. He always has.
Fears¶
Values & Lines¶
Flaws¶
Personality & Mannerisms¶
- Performs merry constantly. The performance is real — he is genuinely amused by most things — but it is also a costume worn over something that watches very carefully.
- Orbits people rather than approaching them directly. He ends up nearby without you noticing him arrive.
- The brass bells sewn into his sleeves are the tell. They jingle constantly when he works the room. When he goes still — when something is actually happening — they are completely silent. He doesn't silence them deliberately. They simply stop.
- Makes eye contact slightly too long before looking away. Just long enough that you notice, and then he's already moved on and you wonder if you imagined it.
Voice & Speech¶
Pattern¶
Example Dialogue¶
[working the room, genuine]: "The odds on tomorrow's bronze-weight fight are criminally generous — someone in the chain house wants that beast to win."
[noticing something he shouldn't know, immediately deflecting]: "You look like people who've had a long week." [laughs, moves on before anyone can respond]
[quiet, to himself, not meant to be heard]: "There it is."
Goals¶
Immediate¶
Work the dinner. Watch the players. Feel out whether the wrongness in the city's week has a face yet.
Long-term¶
Relationships¶
- [[Keleth]]: Trust that is not quite friendship and not quite service. He would not die for Keleth. He would certainly watch Keleth die with great interest.
- [[The Laughing Veil]]: Genuinely loyal to the troupe in the way a cat is loyal to a household — he belongs here, and he is fond of it, but his deepest allegiances are to something the troupe doesn't know about.
- Player Characters: Feels something unusual around them without having words for it. Finds them more interesting than anyone else in the room.
