The Rag'narok¶
A merciless war foretold by ancient prophecy — whose true stakes no mortal yet grasps.
The apocalyptic war that's been gearing up across Aarklash for generations. Prophesied long ago. The end of one age — possibly the start of another, possibly the end of Creation itself. The continent's three Alliances are arming for it. Cadwallon is the prosperous neutral ground between them, and the most profitable place on Aarklash for that reason.
The Cosmic Stakes¶
The gods of Aarklash were exiled by Creation itself after they nearly destroyed it warring among themselves. Time was set as their prison — they cannot return openly without suffering punishment and oblivion.
But the gods have been working around their prison for thousands of years. Through Incarnates — mortal champions bearing divine sparks. Through their most faithful allies. Through every great war on Aarklash, they have been positioning their pieces. The Rag'narok is the war they have been preparing for all along.
The curse of Time is fading. That is why the Rag'narok is coming now.
What Mortals Know¶
- It is prophesied as the war that ends an age.
- The three Alliances are openly preparing armies.
- Skirmishes, raids, and proxy conflicts have intensified across the continent for years.
- Cadwallon is the most prominent neutral ground; every faction has reason to deal with it.
What Mortals Don't Know¶
The real stakes
The Rag'narok is not just a war among nations. It is the war the gods have been preparing to fight directly, once Time's curse loosens enough that they can return. The mortal armies are the kindling, not the fire.
See Desire, The Game of the Gods, The 22 Arcana. The truth that could destabilize every faith on Aarklash lies beneath Cadwallon.
Cadwallon's Position¶
Cadwallon is officially neutral and protected by the Free Leagues. Its strategic location on a peninsula at the heart of the continent makes it the natural meeting ground for every faction's emissaries. The city's neutrality is not a sentimental position — it is enforced, lucratively, by the Duchy, the guilds, and the leagues working in concert.
The neutrality test
Every faction in the Rag'narok would prefer Cadwallon as an ally. Several have reason to take it by force if they can't have it as a friend. The city's neutrality is one diplomatic failure away from breaking.
