Kurn Khaurik Argam¶
"I have recovered my spirits. I am told."
— Kurn Khaurik Argam, at his first public address after the regency was lifted
The youngest Peer in Cadwallon. Son of the assassinated Urakh Khaurik Argam. Heir to the warrior tradition of Khaurik himself. Survived the soft coup by his own goblin godfather. Is now navigating a peerage he was never adequately prepared for, while the Ogrokh succession crisis continues to ripple through the Guild of Blades, the Guild of Blacksmiths, and the Tir-Nâ-Bor / No-Dan-Kar power axis.
How He Came to Rule¶
- 1002, early in the year: Urakh Khaurik Argam is assassinated. The vendetta protocols of the Khaurik Argam family fail to activate — why is still unknown.
- 1002, mid-year: Dazomet — Kurn's goblin godfather — installs himself as regent over the young Kurn, on the publicly stated grounds that "Kurn has not yet recovered his spirits." Multiple witnesses report Kurn appearing drugged, vacant, or possibly magically compulsed.
- 1002, late year: The senior ogre clans of Ogrokh get loud. Dazomet backs off slightly.
- 1003, early: The Duke himself intervenes, sending tutors to Kurn. Kurn "recovers his spirits."
- 1003, current: Dazomet has "devoted himself to improving his palace." Kurn rules officially. Khark, the Mar-An-Org clan leader, handles day-to-day operations.
What He Looks Like¶
A young ogre — barely adult by ogre standards — about 2.1m tall, with a developing belly and the bent, slightly-stooped gait of his kind. Eyes that don't fully focus sometimes, especially after long council sessions. Wears the formal Khaurik Argam ceremonial robe (red and stone-grey) over working leather. Carries his father's warhammer ceremonially; it is too heavy for him to wield well.
What He Is¶
- Genuinely well-intentioned — wants to honor his father's memory and the ogre clans' loyalty
- Educated, but late — the Duke's tutors have done good work, but the gaps from his early years are real
- Quietly traumatized — what Dazomet did to him during the regency was not just political. Kurn does not fully remember some months of 1002. He does not want to.
- Surrounded — every ogre clan, every guild faction, every embassy has an opinion about him. He has very few people he can trust.
Who He Trusts¶
- Khark — Mar-An-Org clan leader; handles every-day business of the fief; Kurn's most consistent advisor
- The Duke's tutors — still resident in the Incarnat
- His younger sister Maya — not yet a public figure; intelligent and watchful
- The ogre Duke's Guard — sworn to the line; Kurn's only true bodyguards
Who He Doesn't¶
- Dazomet — officially "improving his palace"; actually maintaining a network of agents in Thunder Vale and the Guild of Blades
- The goblin smiths in Thunder Vale — favored by Dazomet's regency; Kurn would replace them but cannot move yet without provoking violence
- The dwarven smiths in the Welding Arc — they want Kurn to side with them openly; Kurn cannot afford to without losing the goblin clans
Relations¶
- Duke Den Azhir — protector and patron. Den Azhir spent personal political capital to free Kurn from the regency.
- Dazomet — cold war
- Drakaër family — strong allied bond (the Drakaër-Khaurik Argam alliance is old)
- Guild of Blades — the long-standing landlord arrangement holds, fragile
- Tir-Nâ-Bor embassy — informally backing him via the dwarven smiths
- No-Dan-Kar embassy — informally backing Dazomet
What Kurn doesn't remember
A senior ogre clan elder approaches the party. Dazomet's regency lasted seven months. Kurn remembers two. The elder wants the missing five reconstructed — through forensic inquiry, magical investigation, or by simply finding the agents who were in the room. Some of the agents are still alive. Some have been very quiet.
The warhammer
Kurn's father's warhammer is known to be too heavy for him to wield. A free leaguer who tests it discovers it is also enchanted — and the enchantment was reset (deliberately?) shortly before Urakh's assassination. The hammer remembers. If Kurn could wield it, it would name his father's killer.
The assassination contract
A document surfaces in the Scribes' archive: a sealed copy of a contract from 1001, commissioning the assassination of Urakh Khaurik Argam. The seal is unfamiliar. Cross-referencing names will reveal the network. Cross-referencing names will get the cross-referencer killed.
