Lanever

The young elven Republic of the Ways of Light, on whose peninsula Cadwallon stands. The Jewel of Lanever.

The elven Republic of the Ways of Light under the Dragon totem — the youngest of the Light nations and the landlord of the Free City. Cadwallon sits on Lanever's peninsula, and the city's grandest epithet, "the Jewel of Lanever," names that relationship. Lanever is the political home of the Cynwäll elves — the Light branch of the elven race, taller and stronger than their kin, who left the cradle of Quithayran under Elhan and whose Republic now formally represents them. They are the people whose abandoned city Cadwallon is built atop.

The Dragon culture is no metaphor here: Lanever dragons glide across the city's sky to visit their titanic kin roosting in the Dyrsin Tower, and the Cynwäll alone hold the privilege of riding them — a privilege once extended to Johann, granted a dragon in 843.

Lanever keeps no embassy in the strict sense. Instead the Cynwäll ambassador lives in the tower that dominates the upper city — a secretive figure whom very few have ever met, who never appears at any festivity unless he has something of weight to announce.

In Cadwallon

  • Dyrsin's Tower — the colossal Cynwäll tower over the Upper City, older than Cadwallon itself, home to the ambassador and the titanic dragons; centerpiece of The Pillars in Drakaër.
  • The Watching Tower — the Cynwäll outpost on the outskirts, guarding the road to Lanever.
  • The Cynwäll Ruins — Lanever's elves once were Cadwallon. They hold the buried site theirs and cursed, watch it constantly through the shrews of the Circle of Explorers, and quietly confiscate any dangerous vestige that surfaces.
  • Guild ally — the Cynwäll ride with the Architects (an alliance forged rebuilding after the flood of 900) and the Cartomancers; their language lends the upper city its most impressive turns of phrase.

Relations

  • Cynwäll & Dyrsin — the people and their ambassador; Lanever's living presence in the city.
  • Guild of Architects — the deep technical alliance dating to the flood of 900.
  • Quithayran — the elven cradle; the Cynwäll are the "exiles" (the word means exile) who left it.
  • Akkylannie & Alahan — fellow Ways of Light, though Lanever is markedly more isolationist.
  • Aarklash — "the Jewel of Lanever" frames Cadwallon's whole identity.

Canon & scope

Drawn from the Cadwallon PHB. The Republic's internal government, its cities, and Cynwäll society at home belong to the Confrontation / Rag'narok line and aren't table canon until we adopt them. The PHB shows Lanever almost entirely through its Cadwallon-facing side: the peninsula, the Tower, the dragons, the secretive ambassador, the buried city.
