The Muck

"Better alive and standing than kneeling and dead!" — Orrkrk family motto

The largest district of The Rampart — so much of the fief, in fact, that most Cadwës confuse the Muck with the Rampart itself. Mucky streets, unfit houses, a population surviving by unrewarding labor and begging during the day; deadly silence by night, broken occasionally by shrieks of despair. Dominant attitude: Pugnacity. A district of The Rampart in the Lower City.

Landmarks

  • The Tavern — formerly the Kennel, original meeting place of the Dogs of War. A 903 blaze (suspected revenge by the disgraced Merul family, never proven) left only the blackened front. Rebuilt with a Wolfen-height door, the first-floor knocked out for large patrons, and permanently heated — the only such building in the district. Owner: Lady Allya, a female Wolfen respected and feared in equal measure. The best information source in the lower city. (Subtlety / Neutral)
  • The Rotten Luck — a cursed mossy patch in the street where Rodrigue "Rotten Luck" Merul landed when he leapt from the rampart after gambling the fief away in 902. Passers-by walk around it; some spit on it. (Opportunism / Neutral)
  • The Sitting Square — an old market square turned into a building of a hundred benches, where roughly 500 of the district's poorest sleep tied upright so they don't fall. A ducat buys a bench, militia security, and a loaf of bread. Members of The Rags often meet here. (Opportunism / The Rags)
  • The Leprosy — a large old building sheltering the mentally handicapped, lepers, and consumption sufferers abandoned by their families. Underfunded; the doctors sell bodies to Mid-Nor collectors. (Style / Mid-Nor)
  • The Khelekera (Repentants' House) — the district's only place of worship. An Orrkrk property, run by Synaïya the Convert, an Akkyshan elf. Officially open to all but the Akkyshan presence spooks most Cadwës; Synaïya is nonetheless appreciated for the free medical care she provides daily. (Subtlety / Light)
  • The Temple of Pleasure — Camelia Orrkrk's recently-renovated brothel. All tastes satisfied; can host Wolfen; some employees are Daïkinee. The Akkyshan Ienâ wanders outside looking for prey or lover. (Style / Neutral)
