Guild of Dressmakers¶
"Three floors. Two looms. One name on every invitation that mattered this season."
— A Belvedere apprentice, on her first day
The fashion authority of the upper city. Cadwallon's nobility, ambassadors, and new money all dress here — or they don't dress in public at all. Less powerful than the Goldsmiths or Usurers, but the Dressmakers know more about who is sleeping with whom than the militia ever will, because every fitting is also a conversation.
What They Do¶
- Bespoke fashion for the upper city — gowns, robes, ceremonial dress, courtly costumes for Freedom Week and ducal jubilees
- Importing exotic fabrics — silk from the south, cobweb-silk from Akkyshan agents, dream-vine fabric from the Green Terrace (the in-house garden tended by orc gardeners, notably Arkabast)
- Tailored social armor — fashion in Cadwallon is a status weapon. A senior Dressmaker's seal on your collar tells the right people exactly how much you matter.
- Quiet intelligence brokerage — every measurement is taken in conversation. The senior dressmakers know more about upper-city affairs than the embassies do. They sell the good gossip only to clients who pay for it.
Headquarters¶
- The Belvedere — multi-floor guild seat in the Dressmakers District of Var-Nokkt. Public showroom on the ground floor, fitting rooms on the upper floors, master atelier on the top floor.
- The Green Terrace — the rooftop garden where dream-plants are cultivated. Tended by orc gardeners with permanent residency permits.
- Branch ateliers in Heaven Heights (Soma — the bohemian end) and the [[Embassies]] district.
The Garden Connection¶
What grows on the Green Terrace
Most of the Green Terrace is ordinary luxury botany. But a small inner garden, surrounded by a wall the gardeners never describe to outsiders, holds plants taken directly from active Magical Groves in Petropolis and Arcadia. These plants are processed into wearable fabric that subtly influences the mood of those near the wearer — attraction, calm, suggestibility, depending on the species. The Dressmakers sell these as "exclusive" fabrics without ever explaining what's in them. The Guild of Tailors and Guild of Birders both know. They take their cut.
Relations¶
- Var-Nokkt family — landlord and ally. Hildra Var-Nokkt is rumored to vote on Belvedere internal council without being a member.
- Guild of Tailors — alliance and rivalry. Tailors do nobility's daily clothes; Dressmakers do ceremonial. They share Green Terrace stock but compete for the same noble clients.
- Guild of Favorites — adjacent. Many Dressmaker clients meet their Favorites the night they collect their gowns. The two guilds coordinate.
- Guild of Birders — operational supplier.
Notable Members¶
- The Mistress of the Belvedere — title rotates every five years; current holder a half-elf with old Soma connections
- Arkabast — orc head gardener of the Green Terrace; unofficially the most senior non-human at the guild
The dress that listens
An ambassador's wife dies wearing a Belvedere gown. The militia suspects poison. The husband insists the dress whispered. The PCs are asked to investigate quietly — by the husband, by the militia, or by the Dressmakers themselves who would very much like the dress recovered before anyone tests the fabric.
The garden audit
The Duke has ordered an inventory of all magical-grove flora in the city. The Dressmakers must let his inspectors onto the Green Terrace. They want the PCs to "minimize" what the inspectors find — meaning: move things, lie convincingly, and survive being caught.
