Yalin Aoue¶

Peer of The Automaton when the Automaton's face turns east toward Quithayran. Fourteen years old. The youngest Peer in Cadwallon's living history except for Kurn — and unlike Kurn, she imposed herself on the peerage rather than inheriting peacefully.
How She Came to Rule¶
Two years ago — in 1001 — Yalin's parents mysteriously vanished. No bodies. No trace. The Aoue family fell into succession disarray. Yalin, then twelve, declared herself heir before the council could act otherwise. The Daïkinee elders, raised in tradition, would have followed protocol that pushed her out. A forest animae arrived from Quithayran and stood beside her chair. The protocol question never came back up.
She has ruled the Daïkinee side of the Automaton ever since.
What She Looks Like¶
A Daïkinee girl of fourteen, slight even by elven standards. Pale green eyes that older Daïkinee describe as "untouched by Cadwallon." Wears woven sylvan garments in the Quithayran style with a few concessions to Cadwë formal dress. Her favorite cloak is moss-green with embroidered insect-trail patterns from her family's Beetle culture.
How She Rules¶
- Quithayran tradition as her foundation — she was raised by Daïkinee dignitaries before her parents' deaths
- Cadwë modernity as her practice — she knows the Free City does not run on forest-protocol
- Decisions rarely contested — even her senior advisors find themselves disarmed by her directness
- The forest animae is her sole council on truly difficult matters
The Animae¶
What it is and isn't
The animae that advises Yalin is not an ordinary Quithayran spirit. It appeared too soon after her parents' disappearance and bears markings the senior Daïkinee delegates do not recognize. It speaks in a voice only Yalin clearly hears. It refuses formal greetings.
The Quithayran archons suspect — but cannot prove — that it is a fragment of a Magical Grove consciousness rather than a true forest spirit. If that's correct, Yalin is being advised by something that is, distantly, Desire. The senior Daïkinee in the embassy have begged her to dismiss it. She has refused.
Her Parents¶
What happened to them
Yalin's parents were investigating the underground beneath the Automaton fief — specifically, the Walled Library and the coiling depths where the surviving Ophidian sanctuary S'ylice holds court. They had a meeting scheduled there in 1001 and never returned.
Yalin does not yet know this. The senior Daïkinee elders do — and have suppressed it from her. They believe telling her would push her to investigate, and the investigation would kill her.
Relations¶
- Xär-Lilith — co-Peer. Formal courtesy, mutual distrust. Yalin is the only person in the city who has negotiated successfully against Xär-Lilith (a treaty on water rights, 1002).
- The forest animae — primary advisor
- The senior Daïkinee elders — uneasy. They raised her. They are now keeping the most important secret of her life from her.
- Duke Den Azhir — protective. The Duke quietly sees her as the most promising young Peer in the city.
- Drakaër family — supportive of her independence
- The Daïkinee embassy at the Mangrove Temple — defers to her in public, frets in private
The truth about her parents
A free leaguer learns what happened to Yalin's parents. The senior elders will pay to keep her in the dark. Yalin herself will pay more to learn. The forest animae will pay nothing, but suggests the inquiry quietly. The party must decide which truth they're selling and to whom.
The Animae's instructions
The forest animae has begun giving Yalin instructions that do not match Daïkinee tradition — including small acts that have, in retrospect, served Desire's slow waking. A senior Daïkinee approaches the party: they need someone to observe Yalin without her noticing, log the instructions, and bring evidence back. The implication, unstated, is that Yalin may need to be removed from the peerage for her own protection.
