Guild of Architects

"We built the city you are standing in. Be careful."
— Inscribed at the entrance to the Perfect Tower

The engineering brain trust of Cadwallon. Architects, masons, civil engineers, dwarven mechanists, and Cynwäll-trained vestige scholars. The guild rebuilt the upper city after the Great Flood of 900 and has shaped every major construction since. The most technically powerful guild and one of the most politically restrained — engineering takes years, and you do not rush an Architect.

What They Do

  • Building design and construction — the towers, bridges, suspended structures, and crossbeams of the upper city are theirs. Most of the lower city's masonry too.
  • Urban planning — the Architects advise the Duke and the Peers on district expansion, water management, fortification, road planning
  • Dwarven mechanical engineering — steam works, hydraulic systems, the Var-Nokkt pipe network in The Bridges
  • Vestige study — surviving Cynwäll and Sphinx structures are studied by Architect specialists. The guild has the largest non-Cynwäll collection of pre-Cadwë engineering knowledge on Aarklash.
  • Airship and ship engineering — joint operations with the Ferrymen (Ferrymen crew them; Architects design them)
  • The Tractor — their crowning recent public work: the great steam-rail line, completed in 1003 after three years of construction. (See the Tractor section below.)

Headquarters

  • The Perfect Tower in Drakaër — guild seat. Designed as a demonstration of Architect capability — every floor uses a different structural solution. Tourist attraction by day, locked archive by night.
  • Architect Hall in Ka-Ân-Vor (Var-Nokkt) — operational center for dwarven projects
  • The Drafting House in The Old District (The Automaton) — long-running renovation work on Sphinx-era structures

The Great Flood Rebuild

In 900 the Great Flood devastated the city. The Drakaër district was particularly vulnerable — the Cynwäll pillars sit on land that floods badly. Lanever Cynwäll engineers crossed the sea to help the Architects rebuild. This collaboration formalized into a permanent technical alliance — Architects with their guild seat in Drakaër have studied alongside Cynwäll masters ever since. Most senior Architects can read pre-Cadwë engineering texts. This is the foundation of the guild's deep technical advantage.

Allies in the Rag'narok

The PHB lists: Cynwäll elves, Griffins of Akkylannie, Lions of Alahan, dwarves of Tir-Nâ-Bor. The four most engineering-capable cultures. The Architects export their expertise to all four during the war years — Cadwallon's siege engineers, fortification consultants, and bridging specialists fly Architect colors on contract across Aarklash.

The Tractor

Begun in 999, completed in 1003, the Tractor is the Architects' proudest public achievement: a gigantic steam machine that runs Kraken Harbor ↔ Ogrokh, four round-trips daily, pulling five wagons (four freight, one passenger). It reaches the speed of a trotting horse and makes the trip in an hour. It cannot enter the upper city — goods transfer at the gates to the warehouses of The Stock. The passenger wagon, built for 40, now crams in roughly 100 riders of all sizes. Cadwës treat it as the proof that the Free City can out-engineer the nations.

That is the whole of what the public knows, and all of it is true.

What the Tractor also is

The public Tractor line is real and works exactly as advertised. But the three years of "construction" did more than lay rail. Beneath the Ogrokh terminus, a small senior team within the Architects — working with a single Cynwäll engineer from Dyrsin's tower — used the cover of the rail project to sink a deep-bore shaft toward the Sphinx-era barriers that have been bleeding [[Labyrinth]] material into the catacrypts since 999. The steam plant that drives the train also powers the bore.

The senior Architects believe — correctly — that the city's underground is becoming structurally unstable as Desire wakes, and that the Flood of 900 was an early symptom of the same process. The bore is an attempt to engineer a response: either to shore up the failing barriers or to reach and study them. The Duke knows. Dyrsin knows. The full senior council of the Architects does not — to them, the Tractor is just a triumphant train.

Relations

  • Drakaër family — landlord and old ally. The Architect-Drakaër-Cynwäll triangle is the strongest engineering bloc in the city.
  • Cynwäll / Dyrsin — technical alliance dating to 900. Privileged access to pre-Cadwë knowledge.
  • Var-Nokkt — operational partner for dwarven mechanical work. Money flows; rivalry sometimes flares.
  • Guild of Ferrymen — engineering / crewing partnership; recurring disputes over the airship technology concession after 991
  • Guild of Goldsmiths — financing relationship. Goldsmiths fund construction; Architects deliver.
  • Free Leagues — informal alliance. Architects employ free leaguers for catacrypt survey work, vestige extraction, and underground security.

The Tractor's hole

An Architect surveyor returns from the deep bore beneath the Ogrokh terminus with a fragment of [[Litiocs|litioc]] stone embedded in his face. He is going blind — exactly as the legends predicted for anyone who damages a litioc. The senior Architects need someone to retrieve what he was carrying. Quietly.

The Flood, second time

An Architect engineer has detected micro-subsidence in three districts — the early sign of a structural shift toward another flood. The senior council is divided on whether to publicize. They will pay free leaguers to confirm or refute the readings. Whoever the answers go to first will reshape the city's politics for a decade.
