The Swamps

"Better alive and standing than kneeling and dead!" — Orrkrk family motto

The waterlogged southern district of The Rampart, named for the many ponds and waterholes fed by rain and dirty runoff. Repulsive smell, disease-ridden vermin, the wretched of the wretched. The militia raids periodically to remove the terminally ill before epidemics start. Dominant attitude: Pugnacity / Opportunism. A district of The Rampart in the Lower City.

Atmosphere

  • By day: deafening — cannonballs from Ogrokh's Shooting Range pound the great wall, and chunks of stone routinely fall into the Swamps from the Ogrokh side
  • By night: strangely beautiful. The noise stops; the stars reflect in the pools like a thousand mirrors

Landmarks

  • Lil'cad — a former tomb-raider encampment turned outlaw lair, home to about a hundred illegal independent shrews evading the Guild of Thieves' taxes. Run by the Archduke (an underground figure of contested authority). Camelia's renovation plan to fill in the Swamps must go through Lil'cad — Camelia is rumored to have met with the Archduke about this, though no witnesses can be found. (Discipline / Archduke)

The Archduke's compromise

Camelia Orrkrk wants Lil'cad cleared so she can fill in the Swamps and revitalize her fief. The Archduke holds a hundred illegal shrews she'd need to displace. Their negotiation is ongoing, hidden from the Duke, the Guild of Thieves, and Camelia's own Orrkrk rivals. A free league brought into either side of this conversation lands in the middle of a deal that could go several ways.

Cannonball fallout

Stone blocks falling from Ogrokh's shooting range have killed Swamps residents for decades. A goblin sweep-team (paid by the Orrkrks) collects the iron from the cannonballs for resale. Recently, the team has been recovering shaped fragments that aren't from Ogrokh ammunition — older, stranger, deeper. The Swamps' waterholes may go deeper than anyone thought.
