The Automaton

A fief governed by a giant clockwork statue. Two elven peoples sharing power because a dead half-elf demanded it.

Vibe: Built in former Cynwäll quarries, set in a bowl-shaped depression. At the center stands a colossal gilded construct — the Automaton — visible from anywhere in the fief. By day, life follows a rigid routine. By night, silence weighs over the districts, broken only by the customary "clang" as the Automaton's face changes orientation. Dominant Attitude: Discipline.

The Automaton Itself

A pre-Cynwäll relic that the Cynwäll mages "gave life to" in 834. Its face turns on a mysterious and unpredictable cycle — sometimes still for weeks, sometimes shifting daily. When its gaze faces the forest of Quithayran, the Daïkinee rule. When it faces west toward the shadow webs of Ashinân, the Akkyshan rule. Watchmen for both ruling houses stake the Automaton Square day and night, ready to run to their Peer the moment it begins to shift.

Twilight's spirit

Common belief holds that the spirit of the half-elf founder Twilight found refuge inside the Automaton when he died, and that he is the one choosing when the face turns. Since the beginning of the Rag'narok, the face has stopped twice in an in-between position. Some read this as the end of the compromise between the two communities.

Canon Facts

  • Joint Peerage: Xär-Lilith (Akkyshan) and Yalin Aoue (Daïkinee) — they rotate effective rule with the Automaton's face.
  • Founder: Twilight — a half-elf from "a company of pariahs," died at the Battle of the Automaton driving back Sophet Drahas's spectres. His company received the fief.
  • After Twilight's death, his Daïkinee and Akkyshan followers tried to maintain unity. The arrangement collapsed under cultural hatred; for months the fief was the stage of skirmishes between the elven branches. Scaëlin's old betrayal of the Daïkinee bled fresh.
  • In 834, the Cynwäll of Laroq intervened. They offered the alternating-control system, gave the Automaton its movement, and made it the symbol of the union.
  • The Cynwäll never interfere — except in cases of major dispute.

The Two Ruling Houses

Xär-Lilith family (Akkyshan, Spider culture)

  • One of the most venerable elven families. Traces its origin to Scaëlin's escape — its founder was Scaëlin's first courtesan.
  • Matriarchy led by an old woman known only as Xär-Lilith ("Eye"). Frail-framed but reputedly a phenomenal diplomat. Rules alone; her advisors rarely survive a year in her service.
  • She possesses the gift of ubiquity — being in multiple places at once.
  • No direct heirs; surrounded by intriguers.

Aoue family (Daïkinee, Beetle culture)

  • Led by Yalin Aoue, fourteen years old, who imposed herself as Peer two years ago after her parents disappeared mysteriously.
  • Raised by Quithayran dignitaries to respect tradition, but conscious of Cadwë modernity.
  • Decisions rarely contested even by older advisors.
  • The only being who can change her mind is a forest animae that appeared shortly after her parents vanished.

Districts

  • The Old District — Automaton Square, the trade in underground artistic loot, the Company of the Bolt's perpetually-renovated mansion, the Arcade museum-street
  • [[The Fine Shaft]] — quarry-tunnel housing, Lady Fyea's pools (women-only hot springs with miraculous healing waters)
  • The Precious — heavily guarded gem trading district, dark goddess temple within
  • The Observatory — Cartomancer-built white stone observatory; northern shore is the "Mangrove Temple" where Quithayran elves meditate
  • The Line — Guild of Architects HQ

Power & Politics

  • Most economic locations have two owners (Daïkinee and Akkyshan) who alternate with the Automaton's gaze. Each maintains separate clientele, goods, and habits.
  • Half-elves take their allegiance from their maternal ethnic line.
  • Few non-elf Cadwës accept work in the fief, but most respect the rules.
  • The fief is undermined by forgotten mine shafts beneath it — tremors are common, building stability is precarious, and the city employs free leaguers to map the network. Officially "of scientific interest."

The stopped face

Twice during the Rag'narok, the Automaton has held an in-between position. If it stops a third time — or stops permanently — the whole alternating-power system breaks. Both communities are bracing.

Yalin's parents

Two years ago they vanished without explanation. A forest animae appeared shortly after to advise their daughter. What's the connection?

The Talisman of Shadows

Sophet Drahas stole it from the Thieves. Spectres of Acheron once tried to push through to the Automaton itself. The two threads may be one.
