The Magical Invasion

"In 956 magical beings launched an attack on the city from their elemental realm. In the face of this unexpected and unknown enemy, only the original tactics of a foreign general allowed them to triumph."

The Water Elemental invasion of 956 — an attack on Cadwallon from an elemental Realm, repelled by the foreign general Denerac Ghiéron, whose reward was a fiefdom of his own: Ghieronburg. One of the three great external threats the Free City has survived (with the founding war and the Akkyshan raid).

What Happened

In 956, magical beings — Water Elementals, the Anfrebians — launched an assault on Cadwallon from their elemental Realm. This was an enemy unlike any the city had faced: not an army marching overland, but an incursion from one of the elemental Realms, exploiting the peninsula's thin boundaries between worlds (the same metaphysical weakness that makes Magical Groves and The Labyrinth possible).

The city was unprepared for a foe that didn't fight by conventional rules. Conventional defense failed.

Denerac's Victory

A foreign general named Denerac — not a Cadwë, an outsider with no fief and no standing — devised the original tactics that turned the invasion back. The details are not recorded in the public sources, but the result was decisive: the Anfrebians were repelled, and Denerac became a hero of the Free City.

His reward was ennoblement and a fiefdom: the former goblin colony near the harbor became Ghieronburg, and Denerac founded the Ghiéron line. The fief's foundational pride — and its inferiority complex, being a "new" all-human house among older lineages — both date from this moment.

The Lingering Threat

The Elementals never fully left

The Anfrebian invasion was repelled, not eliminated. Water Elementals still hide in the Cadwallon underground — specifically in "the oasis," a network of warm, humid tunnels beneath Ghieronburg and Ogrokh. They have been there since 956, undiscovered, spies at the heart of the Free City. If their presence were exposed, it would spark a diplomatic crisis with the elemental Realm of Water (the "reflection of Water"). The Guild of Sewer Workers may have noticed warm outfalls; nobody has connected the dots. (see The Sewers)

Significance

  • Created Ghieronburg and the Ghiéron line (Bernadil Ghiéron's family)
  • Proved Cadwallon's vulnerability to Realm-incursion — the city sits on thin metaphysical ground; enemies can come from other worlds, not just over the walls
  • One of the three great defenses — alongside the founding war and the Akkyshan raid, it's a pillar of Cadwë civic pride and a lesson the Militia and Free Leagues still study
  • Left a hidden enemy underground — the Elementals of the oasis remain

Naming

This event is sometimes conflated with the general "magical beings" attacks on Cadwallon; the canonical 956 event is specifically the Water Elemental (Anfrebian) invasion.

The oasis spies

A Sewer Worker or a shrew stumbles into the warm tunnels of the oasis and sees something that shouldn't be there: Water Elementals, dwelling in the heart of the city, 47 years after they were supposedly driven out. Exposing them means a diplomatic crisis. Ignoring them means leaving foreign spies under Ghieronburg and Ogrokh indefinitely.
