The Labyrinth

"Whoever passes the threshold of the labyrinth, often without knowing, might lose his life. The very few who did come back seem to have lost their minds."

The divine maze at the bottom of everything. Conscience built it around Desire's prison cave to stop Vortiris from freeing his father — an inextricable labyrinth made from a god's sacrificed essence. It is not a structure so much as a condition: time-warped, ever-expanding, a bridge between Aarklash and the Garden of Desire. It is the single most dangerous place under Cadwallon and the literal lock on the world.

Origin

When Vortiris's intrusion nearly freed Desire, Conscience understood his son might break loose at any moment. He sacrificed part of his divine essence to condemn the access — crafting an inextricable maze around the prison cave. Desire calmed and fell back to sleep. But his dreams kept working: over eras they transformed the prison into an Unfinished Realm, a luxurious garden, and the maze acquired a mystic dimension — becoming a link between the Realms, a bridge between Aarklash and the Garden of Desire.

What It Does

  • Expands with every intrusion. "With each intrusion, the labyrinth expands and becomes more complex." Every explorer who enters makes it bigger and worse.
  • Unstable paths and gates. Its divine, magical nature renders the corridors and thresholds unfixed — they shift, reorient, and relocate when unobserved.
  • Warps time. This is its most infamous property. Time inside runs unmoored from the surface. The dwarf Yelmor entered with the Steel Hearts company, wandered "a few days," and emerged 146 years later (left 857, found 1003). (see Cadwallon/06 History/Timeline)
  • Breaks minds. Those who cross the threshold — often without knowing — rarely return, and those who do "seem to have lost their minds."
  • Carries the dream-feedback. Through the Labyrinth, Desire's spiritual force flows up to Cadwallon, and the city's impressions and longings flow back down, feeding him. The Magical Groves are the maze's roots breaking surface.

The Spiritual Geography

Maloth and Vortiris still fight inside it

The two dragons never stopped. Maloth (Light) and Vortiris (Darkness) have extended their influence over different parts of the maze, claiming sections for Light or Darkness. Where the Labyrinth brushes the physical city, it shades Cadwallon's spiritual geography — districts tilt toward Light or Darkness depending on which dragon rules the adjacent stretch of maze. This is why magic and faith behave unevenly across the city. (see Mana & Magic)

The Corridors

The few tarot-mages sensitive enough to feel the Labyrinth have located the "corridors" — paths leading deep underground toward the maze. They guard them jealously, and the two tarot-mage factions (Open Hand / Closed Door) war over whether to use or seal this knowledge. The corridors are scattered across the city, unmapped publicly, each one a guarded secret. (see The Tarot-Mages)

What's at the Heart

At the center of the maze: Desire's prison cave, now grown into the Garden of Desire. Also somewhere within:
- Vanius, lost since the founding era, possibly still wandering, possibly reaching out through the cards
- The Stairway to Nowhere — the threshold beyond time that leads here
- Possibly surviving Ophidians and even Dogs of War who never found their way out
- The fury of the dragon-combat, still resonating

Dangers

  • Getting lost forever — the default outcome of entering
  • Time-loss — emerge into an unrecognizable future (or never)
  • Madness — the near-universal fate of returnees
  • The litiocs — the maze's grey walls; strike one and go blind
  • Expansion — your intrusion makes it worse for everyone, including you

Relations

The map that shouldn't exist

An Open Hand tarot-mage claims she can navigate a stable path into the Labyrinth and back — if escorted by a league willing to follow her instructions exactly. The Closed Door faction will kill to stop the attempt. And if she's right, the path leads toward Vanius.

The thing that came out

Something emerged from a corridor and didn't go mad — or didn't seem to. It speaks. It remembers a Cadwallon that no longer exists. Is it a returning explorer, an escaped prisoner of the maze, or something the Labyrinth sent?
