Senex¶

A dwarf of the Senex royal line of Tir-Nâ-Bor, married into the Var-Nokkt family two generations ago. Mother of Hildra Var-Nokkt (the present judiciary; wife of Torguir IV Var-Nokkt). The marriage that brought her to Cadwallon was secretly brokered and paid for by the Guild of Usurers — the founding act of the Usurer–Var-Nokkt leverage that quietly holds Cadwallon's mercantile upper city in compliance.

Senex herself is not complicit. She is the instrument, not the agent. But she knows — has known for decades — and she has not told anyone. Including, until very recently, her own daughter.

Who She Is¶

A dwarven noblewoman of Tir-Nâ-Bor's royal line. Senex is a member of the dwarven royal house, sister to a senior figure in the Aegis Mountains court, second cousin to multiple Tir-Nâ-Bor diplomats currently housed at Castel Var-Nokkt. Her presence in Cadwallon is the durable expression of the Tir-Nâ-Bor–Var-Nokkt alliance that keeps dwarven trade flowing through the city.
In her late second century by dwarven reckoning (dwarves of Tir-Nâ-Bor lineage live three centuries comfortably). To the Cadwës she looks late middle-aged, white-streaked, dignified. To other dwarves she is young to middle.
A scholar of dwarven jurisprudence in her own right — the discipline she practices privately, the discipline her daughter Hildra applies publicly. Hildra learned everything she knows about Cadwë judiciary work from her mother's private tutoring.
The "Senex" of the name is the line, not the given name. Cadwës use "Senex" as personal name because the dwarven personal name is never given to outsiders. Even Torguir IV, married to her daughter, calls his mother-in-law Senex.

The Marriage¶

How the Usurers bought it

Two generations ago — when Torguir IV's grandfather was Peer — the Guild of Usurers approached the Tir-Nâ-Bor royal council with a dwarven-honor-coded proposition: a marriage between a Senex daughter and a Var-Nokkt heir, with a dowry that would publicly honor the dwarven royal house and privately satisfy a Cadwë debt nobody outside the Usurer inner circle understood. The Tir-Nâ-Bor council accepted; Senex was sent; she married Torguir IV's father. The Usurers paid the dowry on the Var-Nokkt side, masked as a Goldsmith loan, redeemable only by Usurer instruction.

What this means in practice: the Usurers hold a paper that, if surfaced publicly, would prove (a) Senex's marriage was bought, (b) the dwarven royal line was misled about who paid, and (c) the Var-Nokkts have been complying with Usurer instruction for two generations to keep that paper buried. The dowry document exists. Senex knows it exists. She has known since approximately the second year of her marriage, when she discovered the discrepancy between what her family was told and what was actually paid.

What She Has Done About It¶

For decades: nothing. To expose the deal would shatter:
- The Tir-Nâ-Bor royal line's standing (they were misled and accepted a marriage they would not have accepted)
- The Var-Nokkt name (revealed as compromised assets of the Usurers for two generations)
- Her own daughter's marriage (Hildra is the product of the arrangement)
- The Cadwë–Tir-Nâ-Bor trade relationship in its entirety

Senex is conservative by dwarven training — she does not start avalanches. She has spent decades building a parallel record: the original dowry-document, the names of the Usurer brokers, her own annotated chronology of the family's compliances. The parallel record is in a vault she controls personally inside Castel Var-Nokkt — a vault Hildra has not yet been shown.

Who Now Knows¶

Senex herself — always

What She Wants Now¶

The Rag'narok is coming. The Usurer-Var-Nokkt arrangement was a peacetime tool, built for a world that is ending. Senex is preparing the parallel record for use — not by herself, but by Hildra, when the moment arrives. She believes Hildra is judiciary enough to deploy it correctly. Hildra believes the moment is not yet.

The two records

Senex's parallel record exists in Castel Var-Nokkt. Arkan's parallel record exists in the Aegis mountains. The two records have never been compared. A free league that delivers a sealed message between Senex and Arkan — and waits for the response — performs a service that may end the Usurer hold on Var-Nokkt in one afternoon when the records are finally cross-referenced. The catch: every party that doesn't want this to happen is watching for exactly this contact.

The grandchildren

Hildra has children. Senex's grandchildren are half-Cadwë, quarter-Tir-Nâ-Bor royal, quarter-Var-Nokkt. By dwarven law, they have claims of standing in Tir-Nâ-Bor that no full-Cadwë Var-Nokkt could press. Senex has begun teaching the eldest grandchild — quietly — what those claims are. If the political situation collapses, the grandchild may matter more than any of the adults.
