Arkan Var-Nokkt¶

The brother of Torguir IV Var-Nokkt, vanished from Cadwallon some years ago and living in hiding in the Tir-Nâ-Bor mountains. By Cadwë law his peerage rights are dormant; by Cadwë rumor he is the one Var-Nokkt who knows what the Guild of Usurers hold over the family and walked away rather than serve the lever. He maintains a small network of correspondents in the city — quiet, slow, careful — and is one of the very few living people who could publicly break the Usurer–Var-Nokkt hold if he chose to surface.

Why He Left¶

Arkan grew up in the Hildra-generation Var-Nokkt court — the household his brother now rules through. He had access from boyhood to every chamber, every ledger, every conversation. He figured out the Senex marriage was bought.

Unlike Ôdril Haarken, who pieced it together from outside banking traces, Arkan saw it from inside the household — the documents Hildra never put in any vault, the original dowry terms, the names of the Usurer brokers who had been at his mother's table when he was a child. He was, depending on the version of events, somewhere between fourteen and seventeen when he understood.

He spent the next several years deciding what to do. He chose to leave.

He did not denounce the family.
He did not approach the Duke.
He did not tell his brother Torguir.
He left the city — destination unknown publicly, in fact Tir-Nâ-Bor, to dwarven cousins of his mother's line.

He has not returned.

Where He Is Now¶

Arkan lives in a small mountain settlement in the Aegis range, several days' travel from any Tir-Nâ-Bor metropolitan center. He is hosted by a dwarven family who share blood with the Senex line through a different branch — a careful and politically meaningful choice. His Tir-Nâ-Bor hosts shelter him on the understanding that if he ever surfaces with what he knows, it will reshape the Cadwë–Tir-Nâ-Bor diplomatic landscape.

He is healthy, married (to a dwarven scholar), and the father of two mixed-heritage children who would, technically, have a Cadwë claim — though the Cadwë heralds have not yet ruled.

Who Knows He's There¶

His Tir-Nâ-Bor hosts — entirely
The Guild of Usurers — yes; they have monitored his location for years and have not moved against him. The restraint is informative.
Torguir — yes, since approximately 999; the brothers have not communicated
Hildra Var-Nokkt — almost certainly. She has not raised it.
Master Ôdril Haarken — was working on a back-channel approach when he disappeared

What He's Doing¶

Compiling. Slowly, over the past several years, Arkan has been writing a dossier — the original Senex-marriage documents, his own annotations, the Usurer brokers' names, the chain of money. The dossier exists. It is somewhere in the Aegis mountains, in a place only Arkan knows.
Waiting. For what is not clear. Possibly for the Rag'narok to make his publication tactically possible. Possibly for the Usurers to make a move that forces his hand. Possibly forever.
Living quietly. He has a life he likes. He does not want to be a hero.

The succession problem

If Torguir IV dies without a clear heir surviving him, Cadwë law of peerage descent says the title would pass to the next Var-Nokkt male of age. The Var-Nokkt heir-of-record is Torguir V (Torguir IV's son). But if Torguir V dies first, or if the dowry-conditions of the Senex marriage are publicly contested, Cadwë law could be argued to revert succession to Torguir IV's brother — Arkan. The Usurers have spent considerable resources ensuring Torguir V remains healthy. They have spent even more ensuring Arkan stays in Tir-Nâ-Bor.

The dossier extraction

A free league is approached — through a very careful chain of contacts (likely originating with Isabeau Soma or the Duke's archive) — to travel to the Aegis mountains, find Arkan, and bring back a copy of the dossier, not Arkan himself. The job is difficult, expensive, and walks the league straight through Usurer surveillance, Tir-Nâ-Bor diplomatic protocol, and Arkan's own willingness (or refusal) to release the documents.

The Cadwë claim

Arkan's older child is approaching the age of majority by Cadwë reckoning. A Cadwë claim of peerage — pressed publicly by a Tir-Nâ-Bor royal relative — would force the city's heralds to rule on whether the child counts. The ruling itself would force Arkan's situation into the public record. The party may be hired to promote the claim or to bury it. Either job opens the same door.
