Khaurik

Brother-in-arms of Vanius from the Dogs of War era. Leader of the last surviving ogre clans after the Rag'narok's early years exterminated most of his kind across Aarklash. Died in 832 — the same year as the founding — holding off a ghoul attack alone and disarmed. Awarded a fief posthumously; his descendants still rule it.

What the Cadwës Tell

The ogres were native to the Ægis Mountains and had lived in loose family groups for ages. When the Rag'narok came prematurely for them, the civilizations of the countries they lived in exterminated them, one clan at a time, because the ogres could not adapt. The ultimate survivors — led by the warrior Khaurik — took refuge in Cadwallon, where Vanius offered them a homeland.

Khaurik joined the Dogs of War. He fought beside Vanius in the campaigns. He was known as the most loyal of the lieutenants and the one Vanius trusted to hold a position no matter the cost.

In 832, late in the founding year, a night-time ghoul attack struck a position Khaurik was holding. He had been separated from his weapons. He held the breach with his bare hands until reinforcements arrived. He died from his wounds.

Vanius ennobled him posthumously. The fief of Ogrokh would be created twenty-seven years later (in 859) for his heirs — the Khaurik Argam family, "sons of Khaurik."

What He Was Actually Like

  • Massive even by ogre standards — 2.4m tall, over 350kg
  • Loyal to a fault — refused to abandon Vanius even when other lieutenants pushed for autonomy
  • Carnivorous instinct controlled — Khaurik was the first ogre to publicly entrust his children to godfathers of other races, the tradition that still defines ogre child-rearing in Cadwallon
  • A reluctant warrior — the Cadwë stories paint him as a fierce battler; the senior ogre clans remember him as someone who grieved every kill

The Ducal Guard

The Duke's elite guard is composed of ogres — exclusively — and is descended directly from Khaurik's surviving clan. The arrangement was Vanius's gift and has never been revoked. The Guard takes its loyalty oath in the name of Khaurik and dies before betraying the Duke.

Why He Still Matters

  • The current crisis in Ogrokh (the Kurn regency, the Thunder Vale war) is fundamentally a question of what Khaurik would have done. Each faction claims his memory.
  • The Mar-An-Org war academy in The Incarnat still recites the oath of Khaurik's last stand. New initiates are sent disarmed into a sparring chamber to "remember what he did."
  • Dazomet — Kurn's regent uncle — claims goblin tradition gives him standing as Khaurik's spiritual heir through the godfather system. This claim is technically defensible and morally repugnant to every ogre clan elder.

Hooks

The bones

The Mar-An-Org clan keep what they believe to be Khaurik's femur in a sealed casket at the war academy. A goblin scholar of No-Dan-Kar credentials (working secretly for Dazomet) has begun campaigning for the bones to be examined and authenticated. If the bone is not Khaurik's, the Mar-An-Org legitimacy as senior clan is in question. The party may be hired to authenticate, to falsify, to steal, or to destroy.

The first godfather

The first non-ogre family Khaurik trusted with a child was a Drakaër. The tradition has continued: every Khaurik Argam Peer has had a Drakaër godfather. Bernadil Ghiéron's family — not the Drakaër — has begun lobbying for the next godfather choice. The shift would realign the most stable inter-fief alliance in Cadwallon.
