Bernadil Ghiéron

Peer of Ghieronburg. Eldest grandson of Commander Denerac Ghiéron — the foreign general who saved Cadwallon from the Water Elemental invasion of 956 and was ennobled in reward. Charismatic, roughly thirty, publicly the face of a family that knows it doesn't fit in the upper city and is determined to make that not matter.

What He Looks Like

A human in his late twenties, tall and broad-shouldered with the Ghiéron family's characteristic dark hair and prominent jaw. Energetic, almost performatively so. Dresses well — perhaps slightly too well for someone of his actual social standing, which is part of the inferiority complex the senior families gently mock. Smiles too readily. Speaks well in public. Less guarded than a Peer should be.

What His Family Is

The Ghiéron family descends from Commander Denerac. They are:

  • All human — no inter-cultural marriages in three generations
  • Lacking culture and elegance by upper-city standards — their attempts at grand gestures regularly come off as tacky
  • Carrying a serious inferiority complex that masks great ambition and a cunning mind
  • Dynamic and demagogic — they keep direct contact with their subjects, which the older noble houses find vulgar
  • Vulnerable to flattery — crooked schemes have worked on them before (see Tamarez Canal scandal)

How the Family Runs

Each Ghiéron handles their own sphere with substantial independence:

  • Bernadil — Peer, public face, central political authority
  • Gowayn — finance (Bernadil's brother)
  • Isabess — relations with noble houses (Gowayn's wife; the actual diplomat of the family)
  • Martolbe — relations with guilds and leagues
  • Thismee and Ombeline (cousins) — magical phenomena, Sihirs, Voyagers
  • Adalban ("Adaldan") — military, Camp Valiant on Wyvern Road, the family's last living direct child of Denerac. Long-running personal hatred with [[Silnus Drakaër]].

His Real Project

Bernadil's quiet long-term goal is to make the Ghiéron family equal to the older houses — not by mimicking them (which the Tamarez Canal scandal proved he cannot do) but by leveraging Ghieronburg's actual unique asset: the fief is genuinely magical. Fayrees, Elementals, magical Familiars live there. No other peer can say this. Bernadil intends to make Ghieronburg the magical-creature diplomatic hub of the city.

This is why he has not moved against Baron Mardi despite 41 years of Mardi extracting unclear concessions: Mardi's Truce works, and Bernadil needs it to work for the long-game plan.

What He Doesn't Know

The Baron Mardi exchange

Bernadil knows Mardi takes something in exchange for the Truce. He believes it's prestige, or political leverage, or possibly a quiet vote at the Mardi-private rituals every decade. The truth is that Mardi takes a percentage of Ghiéron family children's dreams — specifically, he siphons fragments of ambition from young Ghiérons during sleep. This is why every Ghiéron has the same combination of inferiority complex and over-stretched ambition: Mardi has been shaping the family bloodline for forty-one years. The next Truce renewal will be the one Bernadil is asked to host personally.

Relations

  • [[Silnus Drakaër]] — uncle Adalban's personal enemy; Bernadil has inherited a manageable but real cold war with the entire Drakaër military faction
  • Albanne Drakaër — Albanne is the head of the family that hates Bernadil's uncle. The two have never met privately. Both would consider it useful. The Drakaër-Ghiéron-Orrkrk mediation is one of the Rampart's standing diplomatic projects.
  • Baron Mardi — the question of his reign
  • Duke Den Azhir — the Duke supported Bernadil's accession; Bernadil is loyal in return
  • The Sihirs and Voyagers managed by Thismee and Ombeline — strong, growing

The dreams stop

A young Ghiéron child — Gowayn's youngest — has stopped having ambitious dreams. She is content. She is calm. The family is alarmed in a way they cannot explain. Bernadil quietly asks the party to investigate without involving the household magicians.

The Mardi renewal

The decade-Truce renewal is approaching. Mardi has requested Bernadil's personal presence at the ritual. Bernadil's senior advisors are split: refuse and break the Truce, or attend and accept whatever Mardi takes. A free league brought into the inner circle could observe — and possibly intervene.
