Master Ôdril Haarken¶

A chapter master of the Guild of Goldsmiths and a respected senior figure in the guild's banking-and-diplomatic arm. Asked the dangerous question publicly at council: what do the Usurers hold over Var-Nokkt that keeps the family compliant? Three days later, his chapter house was locked, his apprentice in tears, and Ôdril himself had not been seen for ninety hours. He is the central live thread of the upper-city power restructuring that may define 1003.

What He Looks Like¶

A human in his late sixties, bone-thin in the way Goldsmith chapter masters get after decades indoors with ledgers. White hair tied back; Goldsmith ceremonial robe in the formal session; everyday work robes otherwise. A face people trust on first meeting and remember on the second — a useful asset for the senior Goldsmith who keeps the diplomatic banking book.

What He Was Doing¶

Ôdril was not just a chapter master. His specific portfolio inside the Goldsmiths was embassy banking — letters of credit for ambassadors, currency exchange for diplomatic missions, the delicate work of moving money between Alliance powers without anyone losing face. He was on first-name terms with [[Brehnan of Alahan]], the Akkylannian ambassador's senior staff, and the No-Dan-Kar commercial attaché.

Over the past three years, that vantage gave him line-of-sight into something the rest of the Goldsmiths didn't have: the flow of money between the Usurers and the Var-Nokkt family when viewed against the flow of money between Var-Nokkt and the embassies. He saw an anomaly. He spent two years quietly confirming it. Then he asked his question.

The Question¶

At the senior Goldsmith council, three days before his disappearance, Ôdril stood and asked publicly:

"I have been a chapter master of this guild for thirty-one years. I have seen the books. I have seen the council. I have seen the Var-Nokkt family operate without a meaningful contradiction from this guild, on any meaningful question, for the entirety of my tenure. I am not asking whether there is leverage. I am asking what kind."

The room did three things in sequence:
1. Silence for the time it took to count to thirty
2. Adjournment by the Guild's senior chair without a vote
3. Three private conversations in the hallway afterward, two of which were with Usurer-aligned Goldsmiths

Within seventy-two hours, Ôdril was unreachable.

Where He Is¶

Honestly unknown. The plausible outcomes:

Dead in a Court of Shadows operation — the simplest theory; Drahas's network can disappear a Goldsmith chapter master in under a day. The body has not surfaced. Yet.
Held alive by the Usurers — for interrogation; to understand what he knows, who he told, what evidence he has. The Usurers would prefer this option if they can manage it.
In hiding, alive, by his own choice — possibly under Isabeau Soma's protection (she has been paying very well, very quietly, for him to be located alive)
Already dead by his own hand — if he believed his information was about to be tortured out of him, he had the means and the resolve
Out of the city — fled to Tir-Nâ-Bor, possibly under arrangement with Arkan Var-Nokkt's hidden network, possibly through [[Brehnan of Alahan|Brehnan]]'s embassy channels

What He Knows¶

The Senex marriage

Ôdril figured out the lever. The Guild of Usurers arranged and paid for the marriage between Senex (of the dwarven royal line of Tir-Nâ-Bor) and the Var-Nokkt heir-of-the-day — the marriage that produced Hildra Var-Nokkt (Torguir IV's wife in the present, judiciary, central pillar of the current Var-Nokkt court). Through Senex, the Usurers hold continuous leverage on Var-Nokkt: a marriage they brokered, a dowry whose terms only the Usurers possess in writing, and a sustained inflow of dwarven goodwill they alone can choke off. Var-Nokkt has been complying with Usurer interests for two generations because to stop is to expose the deal — which would shatter both the Var-Nokkt name and the Tir-Nâ-Bor alliance simultaneously. Ôdril figured this out from the banking traces. He told no one. He asked the question instead. That was the gentlest possible signal he could send. It was not gentle enough.

The locked chapter house

The Gilded Tower's chapter house has been sealed by the guild since Ôdril's disappearance — officially "pending inventory." A free league hired by any of the three interested parties (senior Goldsmiths, Isabeau Soma, or the Duke's archive) to enter the chapter house quietly will find Ôdril's working notes were not in his office. He moved them. The notes are somewhere in the upper city in a location only Ôdril knows. They may name names.

The dead-letter drop

Ôdril's apprentice — a young Goldsmith named Wenslen — has been receiving unsigned messages every other day since the disappearance. They contain accurate inside-the-guild information that only Ôdril could know. Wenslen has been keeping them. She does not know what to do. She is twenty-three. She does not have a free league of her own.
